Houston remembered

Whitney Houston had a voice like no other. Tragically, she died the night before the 54th Grammy Awards. Her memory was honoured many times during the awards show.

Singer Jennifer Hudson paid tribute by singing Houston's hit: "I Will Always Love You." Back in 1993, the song won two Grammy Awards - Record of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female.

Host LL Cool J led with a prayer and recording Academy President Neil Portnow also acknowledged Houston in his telecast remarks.

And the biggest winner is...

Adele walked home with a lot of gold after the Grammy Awards - so much so she would not hold it all with both her hands. The uber talented singer scooped up six accolades and it was her first live performance since her vocal cord surgery late last year.

She won the following awards: Album Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for 21, Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Short Form Music Video for "Rolling In The Deep," and Best Pop Solo Performance for "Someone Like You." The last time a musician walked away with six awards was Beyoncé in 2009.

All we can say is congratulations to a well deserved winner!

Protests planned on Grammy night

Certain musicians won't be celebrating music's biggest night. They plan to raise awareness by protesting on an issue very dear to them: to reinstate the 31 categories that were removed from the Grammy Awards.

The group of protesters mainly consist of Latin jazz performers and their supporters. Latin jazz musician, Ben Lapidus, has said: "The category eliminations came from left field. Grammy-winning Eddie Palmieri fought to have Latin jazz. Now Latin jazz is gone." He and other artists believe the elimination of the category has harmed the genre.

In a restructuring process last year, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) cut down the Grammy categories from 109 to 78.

Coldplay and Rihanna take the Grammy Stage

With a single tweet, Rihanna has gotten everyone even more excited about the Grammy Awards: "My friends @ColdPlay and I will be sharing the stage for a performance at this years Annual Grammy Awards!"

For the first time ever, Rihanna and Coldplay will perform "Princess of China" to a live audience. She followed her initial tweet with this one: "WE reached 2BILLION views on @youtube !!! THANK U!!! I'm in a great mood, and I got some GREAT NEWS!!! PRINCESS OF CHINA #GRAMMYS2012."

Chris Martin, Coldplay's frontman has said:  "Our new record is sort of a story; it's not quite a musical, but it's dangerously close. There's a bit of a love-story thread, so we really needed someone to sing even higher than me. [It's] hard, but very possible. You need to be a female really. So, in like a dream scenario, we had a song that I'd secretly kind of written to see if Rihanna would want to sing it. And then the rest of the band wanted to keep it, so we came up with the idea of asking her to sing it with us, and, to our great surprise, she said okay."

As we get closer to the awards night, more performers will be revealed. But we gotta say, this one leaves us very thrilled!

The Grammy Awards has a host this year

After seven years of not having a host for the Grammy Awards, organisers have decided to opt for one this year. And who will fill these shoes? Musician and actor - LL Cool J. Talk about pressure!

The last host for the event was Queen Latifah in 2005 but the ratings were not stellar - only 19 million viewers. Last year's big night topped in a whopping 27 million viewers - the biggest rating since 2000.

And everyone knows this awards night is not about the winners, or even the host. Why, it is about the performers! For 2011, big name stars of yesteryear like Mick Jagger, Barbra Streisand and even Bob Dylan pulled in the high numbers. This year we have names like: Foo Fighters, Bruno Mars, Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift,
and Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson. We can only hope for the same magic...

Nevertheless LL Cool J has put on a brave front. In a press announcement, he has said: "I’m thrilled to be part of Music’s Biggest Night. I will always have fond memories of my first Grammy Awards and to now be hosting the Grammy show, in the company of so many other incredible artists, is a dream come true. Great performances and great music — it’s gonna be a great night!"
